Can ultraviolet disinfection lamp be used to treat food

Jan 08, 2022

UVC has been popular in the food processing industry, but its popularity in the daily life of ordinary people is a little embarrassing, especially for the disinfection of family food. People's understanding of UV is still at the "primary stage". Due to the lack of understanding of UVC UV, people often worry about the residue of UV radiation on the surface of sterilized food. Secondly, they also worry about whether the food irradiated by UV will cause changes in its own properties.

So, can the irradiated food be eaten and whether there is ultraviolet radiation residue on the food surface?

In terms of disinfection methods, the sterilization results of heating and ultraviolet disinfection are the same. Ultraviolet radiation is electromagnetic radiation between 10 nm and 400 nm. When bacteria in food are irradiated by UVC band, deep ultraviolet will destroy bacterial or viral DNA base pairs after being absorbed by bacteria and viruses, making them unable to replicate. DNA molecules damaged by ultraviolet rays are decomposed after entering the human body, and no harmful substances are produced. Therefore, there is no safety problem in using it to disinfect food, and the food treated by ultraviolet lamp can be enjoyed boldly.
